Colliery Disaster Memorial
Colliery Disaster Memorial
Grade II listed gothic style memorial to those who perished in the Trimdon Grange Colliery disaster of 1882. Kelloe (East Hetton) Colliery was a neighbouring colliery of Trimdon Grange, the two villages being only a couple of miles apart. As such several Kelloe men worked at Trimdon Grange and some were among the initial 69 killed in the explosion. A further 5 men from East Hetton Colliery perished underground when attempting rescue (the two mines being linked underground), being overcome by gas. The monument is inscribed with the names of the 26 men and boys buried at Kelloe.
