On June 19th 2019 (the eve of Clean Air Day) the whole of Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter was traffic free between 5pm and 10pm and transformed into “The People’s Pop-up Park”, hosted by local residents’ group The Northern Quarter Forum. As well as marking Clean Air Day, the event was also part of a campaign of lobbying to have the square permanently pedestrianised as part of Greater Manchester's 'Bee Network' of walking and cycling routes including a new route connecting Piccadilly and Victoria stations that would cut through the heart of the Northern Quarter. A traffic-free Stevenson Square, with tree-lined pavements and open-air dining, could be a major step in making the Northern Quarter a greener, cleaner, place to live, work and visit. Stevenson Square is already closed to traffic on a monthly basis to host a food and drink market.
