Oxford Canal: Former Banbury & Cheltenham Direct Railway bridge
Oxford Canal: Former Banbury & Cheltenham Direct Railway bridge
The Banbury & Cheltenham Direct Railway was opened across the canal here in 1887, although, as an indication of its budgetary constrained stop-start construction, the Ordnance Survey large scale map of 1882-1883 already shows the bridge and single track in situ. Passenger services ceased in 1951, but ironstone quarrying operations in Adderbury kept this section open for freight until 1969.

Looking at satellite imagery it is extraordinary how the dismantled railway, embankments and cuttings, has been completely obliterated across the farmland west of here as far as Adderbury. However the arched section of the railway bridge over the River Cherwell, just out of sight to the right here, is still extant.
