Portsmouth Naval Memorial stands on Southsea Common overlooking the promenade. It commemorates nearly 10,000 naval personnel of the First World War and almost 15,000 of the Second World War who were lost or buried at sea. The First World War memorial was unveiled in 1924 and the Second World War extension was unveiled in 1953. The memorial takes the form of a massive stone central obelisk built using Portland stone ashlar with large copper sphere and bronze plaques. It is a Grade I listed building. Link
SZ6398 : Between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight Lack of the pier and hoverport, and a glimpse of the apparant top of the War Memorial in the central far background leaves some doubt as to which part of the coast is in this shot; not the bit NE of the stated viewpoint it seems. Can anyone shed more light please?
