George Square and the City Chambers, Glasgow
George Square and the City Chambers, Glasgow
George Square occupies two squares of Glasgow's grid pattern, so is in fact a rectangle with a 2:1 aspect ratio. This is the view from near the southwest corner towards the cenotaph and the City Chambers at the east end of the square. The building was designed by William Young of Paisley and has been the seat of local government since 1889. The tall column at the centre of the square commemorates novelist Walter Scott. There are several smaller plinths around the square recognising other personalities. The ones nearest the camera are poet Robert Burns (left) and general John Moore (right).
