The West Lancashire Light Railway (WLLR) is a narrow gauge railway which was formed in 1967 to save the narrow gauge railway equipment which was disappearing from local industries. A suitable site was found alongside Alty’s brickworks at Hesketh Bank and some equipment acquired and a short (approx. 150 yards) section of 2ft gauge track, using redundant rails and a set of axles on which the first item of rolling stock was built.

The running line slowly grew in length and now runs from Becconsall station to Delph, a distance of approx. 430 yards. The track extends eastwards beyond Delph station on ledge above the old clay pit which but this is too narrow to contain a run-round loop and so trains terminate at Delph. The WLLR is open to the public on Sundays and Bank Holidays and passengers can ride in semi-open coaches which have been built by the railway's volunteers.
