As seen from the steps of the Forum. Ralph de Gauder, Earl of Norfolk, founded the church between 1071 and 1075, to cater for the market merchants and the new French borough. The current church was built between 1430 and 1455 and financed by the city’s merchants. All stallholders of Norwich Market have the right to be married and buried at the church.

The present building was a deliberate display of wealth on the part of the 15th century citizens of Norwich, then the second city in England after London. The church, which was favoured by the elite of Norwich and by some gentry and aristocracy, is almost entirely faced with limestone, which was brought from many miles away by land and sea since there is no local free-stone in Norfolk.
