The path leaves the National Trust car park in the village of Elterwater.
The path follows Great Langdale Beck as far as Elter Water then it follows the River Brathay to Skelwith Bridge. The path is part of the long distance Cumbria Way which runs 70 miles (112 km) from Carlisle to Ulverston.
