Coates round house, south side, Thames and Severn Canal
Coates round house, south side, Thames and Severn Canal
Five of these round houses were built along the Thames and Severn Canal, each for a lengthsman and his family to live in. The three in isolated locations [including this one] had funnel-shaped roofs to channel rainwater into an underground tank. The ground floor was for animals, the upper two floors for humans. Of the five, this is the only one that is derelict. All five houses had a lean-to addition, usually for the kitchen.
