Auld Wives' Lifts - Craigmaddie Muir
The folktale associated with the 'Auld Wives' Lifts'is that three witches wagered each other as to who could carry the heaviest stone in their aprons. Two put down their stones side by side. The third one capped their efforts by placing her stone on top of the other two stones. A variation of the same tale is that it was a trial of strength to see who could throw the farthest stone, and the biggest stone (weighing between 60 and 70 tonne) landed on top of the other two.
