The pumped storage scheme was the last major work completed by the North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board in 1974. The station contains two reversible pump/turbines at the bottom of 50ft shafts, to enable to tailrace/intake to be located well below the water surface for the purposes of off-peak pumping.
