NS3976 : Tiny fungi on plant stem

Tiny fungi on plant stem
Tiny fungi on plant stem
From a few feet away I noticed these growing about a metre off the ground on an erect but dead plant stem (possibly bramble). In this picture, a short piece has been laid on a fern to make photography without a tripod a little easier; the part shown here is about an inch across. The species is unknown to me, but I took these to be fungi, for want of any other likely candidate: the term microfungi is sometimes used for ones on this scale. In close-up, those in the picture look more like crystals than they do a living thing.

As the map shows, the location is in woods beside a cycle path: compare NS3976 : Rubble, possibly from Brickfield Cottage, taken nearby.
