Remnants of mound's kerb
Remnants of mound's kerb
As mentioned in the main description, NS3977 : Mound beside the River Leven, remains of a curving kerb can be seen here at the foot of the northwestern side of the mound. One section of it can be seen directly in front of the base of the nearest tree, although a covering of lichen has made its colour similar to that of the nearby vegetation; the blocks are in fact made of red sandstone. Other parts of the kerb can be seen nearby, though they are difficult to show photographically.

The presence of a kerb offers some support to the origin theory for this mound that was given in the main description, namely, that it was built by the occupant of Strathleven House as a landscape feature whose main purpose was to block the line of sight from the house to the glassworks at Dumbarton (those works are now long gone, but they would have resembled large cones emitting smoke). Had the mound been an ancient or a natural feature, it is unlikely that a kerb would later have been built around its base.
Mound beside the River Leven
A conspicuous artificial mound whose original purpose is unclear. Some stories about its origin were passed on to me: one is that it was built by the inhabitants of Strathleven House to block the cones of Dumbarton Glassworks (c.17771850) from view. Whether or not that is so, the mound, shown on early OS maps, does lie on the line between the house and the former site of the glassworks.
