The 1953 Leicester Trader was the last Trent dumb barge to be built and the last loaded dumb barge to be towed to Nottingham c.1979. These non-motorised vessels were developed and built in the Trent Navigation Dockyard at Newark in the early 1900s and the manufacture of them continued until the mid 1920s. The first steel barges of this type however, were built in 1908 in Gainsborough and Goole because the Newark yard lacked the necessary steel building capability. Although the vessels in the former Trent Navigation fleet were scrapped in the 1970s this one is maintained as a museum.
