Hawk in a Tree
Hawk in a Tree
A Harris's Hawk rests on a branch in a tree at the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Newent.

The Harris's hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus) is a medium-large bird of prey that breeds from the southwestern United States south to Chile and Brazil.

Harris's hawks have been increasingly used in falconry since the 1980s and are now the most popular hawks in the West (outside of Asia) for that purpose, as they are one of the easiest to train and the most social. Trained Harris's hawks have been used to remove an unwanted pigeon population from London's Trafalgar Square (LinkExternal link Mail Online) and from the tennis courts at Wimbledon (LinkExternal link Daily Telegraph). Birds are sometimes reported at large in Britain, but it is a popular species in falconry and these records almost certainly all refer to escapes from captivity.
The International Centre for Birds of Prey (ICBP) at Newent

Formerly the National Birds of Prey Centre, the International Centre for Birds of Prey (ICBP) is located at Boulsdon near Newent in Gloucestershire.

The centre was first opened to the public on May 25th 1967 as a falconry centre by Philip Glasier, a very well-known falconer of his time. It was the only dedicated bird of prey centre in the UK, and just one of two in the world, at that time the other being in Germany. Over time, and under the direction of Philip Glasier’s daughter Jemima Parry-Jones MBE LinkExternal link the emphasis changed and the conservation of all birds of prey became its primary concern. It is now the oldest dedicated bird of prey centre in the world. It is open to the public seven days a week from the beginning of February until the end of November.

In March 2013 a new branch was opened at Duncombe Park in Helmsley, North Yorkshire.
