HMS Revenge (06)
HMS Revenge (06)
The twelfth of the thirteen ships of the same name which saw service with the Royal Navy between 1577 and 1995, and identified uniquely by her pennant number 06, Revenge was the eponymous lead ship of the five Revenge (or Royal Sovereign) Class super-dreadnought battleships launched during the First World War. Built by Vickers at Barrow, she first saw action at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.

Between the wars she was attached alternately to the Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleets. She is seen here in Portree Bay on a visit to the Hebrides, a month after taking part in the 1937 Review of the Fleet at Spithead for the Coronation of King George VI (when the radio commentator, Lt-Commander Thomas Woodroffe, infamously announced that "The whole fleet is lit up ... by fairy lamps"). Positions can be given only approximately, but the coastline of Raasay visible in the background provides a rough location and view direction.

In the Second World War, Revenge was at first assigned to the Channel Fleet, and later served on Atlantic convoys as part of Operation Fish, escorting the Bank of England's gold reserves to Canada. On her inept approach to Halifax in Nova Scotia she rammed and sank a local trawler, making her the butt of derision among Canadian mariners. In 1943 she was relegated to reserve, though the following year she conveyed Winston Churchill to the peace conference in Tehran. After that she was demoted to a training ship for stokers at Southampton. The final sad chapter came in 1948 when she was broken up for scrap at Inverkeithing. However, part of her lives on, as some of her gear was recycled to construct the Lovell Radio Telescope at Jodrell Bank in SJ7971.
