Channelled sandstones
Channelled sandstones
The sandstone of the district, which belongs to the Stainmore Formation (Carboniferous, Namurian) has been worked extensively for building stone. Great interest attaches to the cross-stratification in the beds exposed here, which show a series of intersecting troughs belonging to meandering river channels in a braided floodplain.
