Local tradition suggests the ecclesiastical site at Banagher was founded by St Patrick, but this may not be supported by evidence. The church on the site dates from the early 12th century and is reputed to have been founded by St Muiredach O'Heney whose relics may lie in a nearby mortuary house.

An inscription on the north side of the west doorway dates from the 18th century, some time after the abandonment of the church.

It reads: "THIS CHURCH WAS BUILT IN YE YEAR OF GOD 474". This is evidently a reference to the tradition that it was a Patrician foundation.
