SK3487 : Cementation Furnace, Doncaster Street

taken 5 years ago, near to Sheffield, England

Cementation Furnace, Doncaster Street
Cementation Furnace, Doncaster Street
Said to be the only surviving example of this type of furnace in Britain, it was used up until 1951. It converted imported wrought iron and charcoal into blister steel. Grade II listed. The wooden structure on the top is a WWII black-out shutter. The surrounding area appears to be a former car park now being redeveloped.
