Wimbledon Windmill
Wimbledon Windmill
Wimbledon Windmill is located on the common and was built in 1817 by Charles March, a local carpenter. It ceased operating in 1864 and was later converted from a hollow post to a smock mill. The sails were stopped from turning in 1946 due to the condition of the gearing and it was eleven years before the mill was again restored to working order. There was further restoration work in 1975 and 1999; there is now a small museum here open at weekends and bank holidays between March and October.
