St Mary's in Orchardleigh Park
St Mary's in Orchardleigh Park
The church dates back to the thirteenth century and has been extensively restored in the 1870s for the estate's Duckworth family. Sir George Gilbert Scott was responsible for the restoration.

But the Orchardleigh estate is a lot younger than the church; once a lake was built for the Duckworths the church became surrounded by a small moat - leading to the familiar description of 'The Island Church'. The church has no electricity supply: services are lit entirely by candlelight and the organ is hand pumped!
