Drummer's Close
Drummer's Close
Drummer's Close is the narrow passage directly ahead. According to "Greenock Historic Quarter", one of several booklets of local walks, the name recalls that "undesirables were drummed out of town from the courthouse along this street".

Drummer's Close is shown and named on the first-edition OS map, surveyed in 1857, and it still follows that line. The street was shown, but not named, on John Wood's earlier (1825) "Plan of the Town of Greenock".

For a detail on the wall just to the left of the passage, see NS2876 : Drummer's Close: plaque (shown earlier at NS2876 : Drummer's Close). For a view along the passage, see NS2876 : Drummer's Close.

William Street is just to the east (on the left, but out of shot). About 20 metres to the west of Drummer's Close was the similar but slightly narrower Buchanan's Close, which is now gone. A little further to the west was the Town Hall, now part of the site occupied by the Municipal Buildings; and just west of the Town Hall was the strangely-named and disreputable Jibboom Square (a jibboom or jib-boom is a component of a sailing ship); see section XIV, "The House with Five Gables", in the 1891 book "Views and Reminiscences of Old Greenock" for further comments on the neighbourhood. Closer to the spot from which my picture was taken was the Bell Entry, discussed in section XIII of the same book.
