NS2776 : Former site of the Old West Kirk

taken 1 month ago, near to Greenock, Inverclyde, Great Britain

Former site of the Old West Kirk
Former site of the Old West Kirk
The plaque set in the pavement states that this was the site of the first kirk in Greenock, established in 1591 and built by Royal Charter of King James VI, and the first church in Scotland to be built after the Reformation.

It goes on to relate that the church had to be moved to a different site to accommodate Harland & Wolff's shipyard. See NS2777 : The Old West Kirk for the church's present location, at the east end of the Esplanade.

In the background of the present picture is the car park for a supermarket. Another contributor's picture shows the same area 12 years earlier, when it was marked out in a different way, with signs rather than a plaque: NS2776 : Original burial site of Highland Mary.
