Young people are taking their bikes down the steep slope at the bottom of the campsite to join the Mawddach Trail, a cycle path between Dolgellau and Barmouth. SH6515 : View from the estuary field at Graig Wen towards salt marsh near Garth Isaf. The embankment running left to right across the view is the remains a well-built old tramway which carried slate down from quarries n the hillside to a jetty on the river. This tramway included an inclined plane. Once the railway (now the cycle path) was built, it looks to me like the tramway was severed where the five-bar gate is. A curve was therefore added to the tramway to bring it to the railway (perhaps this is the bracken-covered ridge visible above the youngsters' heads), while the jetty would have fallen into disuse.
