Tyne Theatre, Westgate Road
Tyne Theatre, Westgate Road
This stands on the lower end of Westgate Road in Newcastle. It was built in 1867 as The Tyne Theatre and Opera House. In 1911, the theatre was converted into a cinema, The Stoll Picture House, which closed in 1974. The lease was acquired by a preservation group which reopened the Tyne Theatre in 1977. It was found that all the original Victorian stage machinery was still in existence. The cinema screen had simply been erected in front of it. It is now operated as The Tyne Theatre and Opera House
