The summit of Temple Hill
The summit of Temple Hill
While wandering, I was drawn to examine the hill, though there is now little of interest to be found there. Later on, I found that, although there are no online archaeological reports pertaining to Temple Hill, the hill is said to have been named after a "Temple" that once stood here.

As the maps linked from the end-note show, the building, no doubt a folly of some kind, was still in existence in 1826, although no trace of it could be seen some thirty years later when the first OS maps of the area were being surveyed, and the OS Name Books were being compiled. The building was present at the end of the eighteenth century: as the end-note mentions, a 1796 map shows it.
Temple Hill, Hawkhead
Temple Hill: "a conspicuous eminence in the policies of Hawkhead; name derived from a Temple which formerly was erected here, no trace of which is now to be seen" [OS Name Books, c.1856]. The building was no doubt a folly; these were often named "Temple" and were fashioned accordingly.

The "Temple" itself was marked on John Ainslie's 1796 map LinkExternal link of Renfrewshire, and on John Thomson's 1826 map LinkExternal link
