Summerhill Park
Summerhill Park
This is a rather surprising green oasis on the western side of Newcastle town centre, in the middle of a very built up area. The Summerhill area was built in the early-mid 19th century as superior housing away from the overcrowded town centre of Newcastle. Although the houses do form a square around the park, this was not originally planned that way. The park occupies what were market gardens when the streets were originally laid out, and didn't become a public park until 1935, for King George V's silver jubilee. The big tower block being erected in the background is Hadrian's Tower, further down Westgate Road.
