Numbers 47 and 49 Main Street comprise an 18th century or early 19th century facade on an earlier building. Along with number 51 SD6178 : Kirkby Lonsdale buildings [24] these formed the Wheat Sheaf Inn, the chief inn of the town until the early 19th century. Kirkby Lonsdale is a small town that developed at a crossing of the River Lune. Granted a market charter in 1227, the town at one time had 29 inns and alehouses of which several survive. The town is rich in historic buildings with over 150 listed.
