Newstead Abbey The Chapel, 2
Newstead Abbey The Chapel, 2
The 13th century chapter house was converted to a chapel by the Webbs in the 1860s, but retains much of its medieval structure. Regular services are still held here.
Newstead Abbey
Newstead Abbey was originally an Augustinian priory, founded by Henry II around 1170. A small religious community existed here until Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1539. Henry then granted Newstead to Sir John Byron, who converted the priory into a house. The 6th Baron Byron, the famous poet George Gordon Byron, inherited the title and estate in 1798 at the age of ten and lived here on rare occasions.
