Ilnacullin/Garinish Island, Co. Cork - Martello Tower
Ilnacullin/Garinish Island, Co. Cork - Martello Tower
One of many Martello Towers constructed by the British War Office and is positioned on the island's highest point. These forts were built as defence against the feared Napoleonic invasion. The island's official guide book suggests a construction date of about 1805. However a date stone above a door in an external wall attached to the tower gives a date of 1815. This is therefore probably the correct date.
