The Tyne Tunnel is a pair of road tunnels beneath the River Tyne, linking Jarrow on the south side with Howdon on the north. The tunnels form part of the A19 road.
Originally there was a single tunnel which opened in 1968, for traffic in both directions. In 2011, a second tunnel was opened. The older tunnel is now used by northbound traffic, with vehicles travelling south using the newer tunnel. There is a toll for using the tunnel.
The tunnels are a short distance downstream from another pair of tunnels, opened in 1951 for pedestrians and cyclists.
