Sunnyhurst Hey and Earnsdale Reservoirs
Sunnyhurst Hey and Earnsdale Reservoirs
Looking NW from Darwen Hill.
At the foot of the slope, Sunnyhurst Hey Reservoir has been discontinued by cutting a notch in the dam (just below centre of photo). A smaller pond has been created. Sunnyhurst Hey Reservoir was constructed in 1875, and had a capacity of 436 Ml. It was roughly rectangular, with a dam on three sides. The dam had a history of seepage and was found to be inadequately constructed (no core). (See SD6721 : Sunnyhurst Hey Reservoir.)
Beyond is Earnsdale Reservoir, which was constructed in 1863, and has a capacity of 433 Ml.
