Kells Priory parking - Kells, County Kilkenny
While staying with an uncle at Kiltinan I went for a drive and was taken by surprise to find this place and on such a scale. Kells Priory beside the Kings River was founded in 1193 by Geoffrey FitzRobert. It was burned three times between 1252 and 1327, twice by members of the de Bermingham family. It is thought that the spacious enclosure with towers, known as Burgess Court, dates from these times of trouble. The Priory was dissolved in March 1540 and given over to James Butler, 9th Earl of Ormonde. Excavations here have uncovered some 20,000 finds. The site is open to the public and guided tours - for details contact staff at Jerpoint Abbey. On the far side of the car park is Ford Escort 1.3L (litre) 1983 model TOE 318Y my trusty transport for some five years. Time photo taken not available.
