Castles of Munster: Shanid, Limerick (1)
This castle commands magnificent views from its position on top of a natural mound surrounded by fragments of a wall on its east side. Approximately a third of a circular keep stands complete to the wall-walk to the south, which had just one upper room over a basement. The keep is contained within a bailey that extends further down a slope to the northeast. It was probably built by Thomas FitzMaurice in c.1200-10 to become briefly the chief seat of the Desmond FitzGeralds, before being eclipsed by their seats at Askeaton, Newcastle, and Tralee. The castle was captured in 1601 by Hugh O'Donnell.
