Whitby Piers
Whitby Piers
Two piers guard the entrance to Whitby Harbour, which is also the mouth of the River Esk. Both have lighthouses; the West Pier lighthouse was built in 1831 to a height of 73 feet, whereas the East Pier lighthouse was built in 1855 and is 55 feet high. Note also the two beacons painted red and green representing port and starboard.
