Tate Hill Pier, Whitby
Tate Hill Pier, Whitby
The first known reference to Tate Hill Pier was in 1190, which, it has been suggested, could make it the oldest pier in the world, although it was rebuilt by Sir Hugh Cholmley in 1632 and extended in 1766. It is located on the east side of the Esk estuary, part of Whitby's lower harbour. The scene is overlooked by St Mary's Church.
