The Swing Bridge - pump room
The Swing Bridge - pump room
The Swing Bridge was designed by John Ure, Resident Engineer of the Tyne Improvement Commission. The firm of Sir W G Armstrong & Co was the contractor for the project, with William Armstrong himself assisting with the design; his company manufactured and installed the wrought iron superstructure and the hydraulic operating machinery. The photo shows the top of the accumulator where water is stored and pressurised to power the engines LinkExternal link .

The bridge is Grade II* listed LinkExternal link . Part of the text of the listing is incorrect. The mechanism is not electrically powered - hydraulic accumulators are now filled by electric pumps, but the bridge is still turned by the original hydraulic engines.
