A view eastwards to Slievenamon, Gaelic Sliabh Na Mban Mountain of the Women. At 2,365 feet 721 metres it is the highest mountain in the South Midlands of Ireland. On its flanks can be seen the Killusty Cross aka (also known as) the Holy Year Cross, a place of pilgrimage, erected in 1950. The name Mountain of the Women comes from the legend that Fionn Mac Cumhaill (Finn Ma Cool?) when choosing a wife arranged a race to the top of the mountain for a number of them. He made sure that his choice, Grainne, won by showing her a short cut. It seems a rather roundabout way of finding a wife when the result was a foregone
conclusion. Time photo taken not available.
