Copper Heaps, Longwork Mine
Copper Heaps, Longwork Mine
There are various heaps of dressed copper ore to be found in the area, ostensibly from Elizabethan times. It is ore which has been partly dressed before it was taken to the smelter, which was located on the outskirts of Keswick. In this case it is awaiting transport which never came. Today, over the years, it is now caked together due to its exposure to the elements over the centuries. The long gash, close by here was known as Longwork and it is of Elizabethan origin.
