The Marquis of Granby
General John Manners, Marquis of Granby,1721-1770, was the eldest son of the 3rd Duke of Rutland and Commander-in-Chief of the British Army 1758-1766 during the Seven years War. His valour, popularity with the troops and practice of funding retiring soldiers to establish taverns has left a legacy of numerous pubs named in his honour. The Marquis of Granby reputedly has more pubs named after him than any other person.
