Discussion on SD7992
I was surprised at John Illingworth's assertion that the Moorcock is the 3rd highest inn/pub in England. This seemed very unlikely to me, so a little checking was in order. There's no claim on the Moorcock's own website regarding altitude, but the OS map gives a clue with a spot height of 312m [1024ft] right by the pub. I would guess that this hardly puts the Moorcock in the 'top 20', but a reliable list of other high altitude inns is hard to find. Certainly Tan Hill is the highest at 528m/1732ft, The Cat & Fiddle by the A537 is second at 515m/1689ft and the Travellers Rest at Flash in Staffordshire is third at 457m/1500ft. After that things get complicated although there's probably a 4th place for the Kirkstone Inn at 451m/1480ft, but then there appears to be a group of pubs close to Flash and the A53 which could all be around 448m/1470ft. Others which are high in the hills, but in no particular order include the Warren House Inn on Dartmoor at 434m/1425ft, the Miners Arms at Nenthead [430m/1410ft], and of course the Lion on Blakey Ridge over on the North York Moors [404m/1325ft]. There are others which one could list, and no doubt there are several inns in West Yorkshire above places such as Halifax which exceed the height of the Moorcock. So is there someone out there who wants to make a definitive list?
