Exeter underground passages (4)
Exeter underground passages (4)
Taken as part of a guided tour. The passages, about 6m below ground and now a scheduled ancient monument, largely consist of two former tunnels taking water from wells or springs to the cathedral and town water supplies. The water was in 2 inch diameter lead pipes rather than flowing freely through the tunnel; the height of the tunnel is only for the reasonable comfort of those who laid and maintained the pipes. This is one of the earlier passages, late 14th / early 15th century, part of the supply to the Cathedral.

Co-ordinates taken from a large scale map in the exhibition centre relating the passages to the present day surface buildings, so correct to +/- 20 metres.
