The bridge has many names, including the Clyde Viaduct, the New Clyde Bridge and the Caledonian Railway Bridge. It was built in 1899-1905 to complement a parallel bridge which was later removed.

It is undergoing a £13million, two-year renovation project by Network Rail which will see the paint removed, steel repaired and then repainting.

The Category A Listed bridge (part of a grouping with the adjacent station) LinkExternal link carries over 1300 trains per day over the River Clyde, into and out of Glasgow Central Station.
