The short section of the National Primary N20 (from Limerick to Cork route) which is motorway standard is designated as the M20 Motorway.

The motorway route starts at junction 1 at the Rosbrien interchange (south of Limerick city) where it connects to the M7 and the N18 which together form the Limerick Southern Ring Road. The route continuing from this interchange was redesignated as motorway in August 2009. The route bypasses Dooradoyle and Raheen, through which the old N20 route used to run until the early 2000s. At present, the motorway section ends at junction 5 (Ballbranogue, Patrickswell) with the main road continuing as the N21 to Tralee and the N20 diverging to head towards Cork city.

It is planned for the entire route from the M20/N21 junction south to Cork to be replaced with a proposed M20 motorway. This has been cancelled and reactivated many times but as of 2018 it is back on and included in the new National Development Plan. It is anticipated to start construction in 2023 and open to traffic in 2026 (LinkExternal link Irish Motorways).
