SO3013 : Abergavenny The curious difference between the Anglicised Abergavenny and the Welsh Y Fenni possibly results from a shortening of Abergavenny to Y Fenni in the 15th C (perhaps started by Owain Glyndwr?), so Abergavenny is the original Welsh toponym. The toponymic prefix Aber in Wales has a particular linguistic structure of the suffix always referring to the tributary - as occurs in the case of Abergavenny.
