SO2613 : Old railway bridge at Gilwern

taken 16 years ago, near to Govilon, Monmouthshire/Sir Fynwy, Wales

Old railway bridge at Gilwern
Old railway bridge at Gilwern
The bridge once carried the Heads of the Valleys line (or to give it its full title, the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway) over the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, which is empty here because of a breach. The railway opened in 1860 and closed in 1958, mainly because it was a difficult and expensive line to operate efficiently because of the terrain through which it passed.
