Lincoln Central Station: Midland Railway war memorial in the ticket hall
Lincoln Central - now the only station in the city - was opened by the Great Northern Railway in 1848. It was not the first station in the city: the Midland Railway opened St Marks station in 1846. The war memorial shown here was originally sited at St Marks but, as the lower plaque explains, was relocated to Central station when St Marks closed in 1985.
The line through St Marks is now covered by a road and the station site has been redeveloped for retail, but the station portico survives: see SK9770 : Former St.Mark's Station.
