Lincoln: Brayford Pool and view up to the cathedral
On the far side of Brayford Pool can be seen one of the distinctive hyperbolic parabloid concrete roofs that were a specialism of Lincoln architect Sam Scorer (1923-2003). Scorer designed this building in 1958 for the Lincoln Motor Company; it later became the headquarters of the Lincolnshire Library Service, and is now a restaurant. Other notable buildings by Scorer include the former petrol station at Markham Moor services on the A1 (SK7173 : Markham Moor: former Little Chef, boarded up), and the church of St John the Baptist in the Lincoln suburb of Ermine (SK9873 : St John the Baptist church, Ermine, Lincoln). Further details of Scorer and his work can be found at Wikipedia: LinkExternal link .
Brayford Pool
It is believed that Brayford (Broad Ford) Pool is where Lincolnís name and earliest habitation is derived; the Iron Age people called the place Llyn (pool of water) Don (settlement on a hill). The Romans Latinised the name to Lindensium shortened to Lindum. Eventually about 80AD it became a colony town where Roman Legionaries were allowed to retire to and was renamed Lindum Colonia. Over the centuries the name developed into Lincoln.
River Witham
The River Witham is a 82 mile long river, almost entirely in Lincolnshire. It rises south of Grantham close to South Witham, passes Lincoln and Boston, finally flowing into The Haven, a tidal arm of The Wash. The river is navigable from Lincoln to Boston.
