NH6349 : Former Post Office, CroftnacreichNH6349 : Road from Croftnacriech to the B9161Croftnacreich or Croftnacriech?Royal Mail and some older Ordnance Survey maps spell the locality name as Croftnacreich. But the OS Name Book (for Killearnan Parish, Ross and Cromarty County in 1848-52) gives Croftnacriech as the primary spelling, with Croftancreiach as an alternative: "A small district, consisting of a number of small crofthouses all of one storey in height and in good repair, situated on the eastern extremity of the parish".
That last comment suggests that the Gaelic original of the name could well be
Croit na Crìche "the croft at the [parish] boundary" An alternative derivation might be
Croit na Creiche "croft of plunder" - though that would demand some rather juicy story to explain it!
The modern OS maps seem to have reverted to the original OS spelling but both versions seem to be still in use, without either being definitive.
