Spoil from Pendeen Mine
Spoil from Pendeen Mine
The crushed rubbish (spoil) was simply tipped down the cliff where the sea would wash it away, a quick and easy solution for the mine owners, who otherwise would have contaminated valuable farmland.
In the distance is the Three Oar Stone (also known as The Wra), a most perilous reef and the graveyard of many a ship & to many sailors in the 19th & early 20thC. The number of ships lost directly led to the building of the lighthouse by Trinity House in 1900.
One such ship was the 298 Ton Prussian barque "Mentor" of Swinemunde (now in NW Poland) which on the 9th March 1862 'clipped' The Wra and leaking badly tried to beach below the cliffs. Seven Prussian sailors were saved by Richard Crean & Edward Rodda, miners at Pendeen, the coastguard rescued the cabin-boy and the captain - Johan Deaks, unfortunately the sea claimed two young men, whose bodies when later found were buried in the churchyard at Pendeen - Gothfred Pohl & Edward Neumeyer.
